When we think about the origins of law, we tend to look to classical civilizations: Greece and Rome. Law and Power in Ancient Egypt invites us to question this view, which has been ingrained since the Middle Ages to the present day, because it omits a key piece: Pharaonic Egypt.
This book was born out of a desire to explore and vindicate the profound legal influence of ancient Egypt, a civilization often pigeonholed into age-old clichés that have distanced it from the field of law. Through immersion in Egyptian texts and culture, the reader will discover a surprising legal legacy that predates Greco-Roman contributions by millennia and challenges the traditional narrative.
Concepts such as the individual, private law, legal philosophy, and even ideas such as carpe diem and habeas corpus have much older roots than is commonly thought. They were not exclusive creations of the classical world, but already existed on the banks of the Nile. Justice, as a pillar of civilization, had its own profound and surprisingly modern genesis in Egypt, which, when better understood, reveals itself to be much closer and more relevant than we imagine.
